I agree with the assessment by Nick that there is a price to pay for using
David Liang's suggestion of a master to DBCLEAR ... you need roughly twice the
memory for doing this (who in their right mind would doubt the word of the
master?!?)

However, in this case, it is probably justified. If you look back at the
original question, the submitter said that there were "many small modules". If
we assume that each small module has roughly the same number and type of
&variables, then any number of modules larger than 2 will make David's
technique pay off. As it stands now, the application is taking up the memory
for ALL of the &variables in ALL of the modules. By using David's technique,
the application needs only roughly 2x the memory of the &variables of ONE
module at a time.

Another point by Nick Rawlings:

David Liang was right: dbclearing a master purges its &items and
&ditems, but there's a price: while not purged, the meta-data takes,
roughly, twice the space, below the line, of regular non-databse
amps. That's 'cause the items need their space, too.
